New Typeset Released
News from Crowhill Cove
A summary for you on what to expect in this edition in case you want to scroll down to the interesting bits: new book added to the updated typeset list; the results of my BBFD; this week on TikTok; and the progress report with an update on my week-on-week sales and writing progress.
Blood Evidence is ready!
My journey towards retypesetting all of my books continues - I’ve just redone and republished Blood Evidence and Blood Alcohol! If you’re following along and want to collect the new editions, Bloodless, Blood Evidence, and Blood Alcohol are the first three books in the Serial Investigations series. On the other hand, if you’re trying to get the original editions and haven’t completed your set, I would probably move fast - I’ll be working on Blood Sucker next and have all of the books scheduled in for a new edition before, hopefully, the end of November.
Upcoming paywalled topics for this newsletter include: a deep dive into The Green Knight; something about Love, Simon’s structure; how I wrote a narrative non-fiction novel that attempted to be faithful to history (scheduled); thoughts on pens (scheduled); further thoughts on the grand slasher and just desserts; shark movies (10% done); and some ecocriticism/historicism around Haweswater.
My BBFD happened!
I had my second BookBub Featured Deal at the start of last week - for Don’t Move Out, at 0.99, but only in Australia, Canada, and the UK (it usually sells well in the US).
It was a bit of an odd one to experience. I was out and about on the day it dropped, and so I didn’t get to closely follow the sales like I normally would. I was also out and about (see below) this Monday when I was supposed to put the price back up, so didn’t get around to doing that until yesterday.
The sales have not set the world on fire. I concluded a few things. I think it works best when I have a deal in the US, because that’s where the majority of my readers are. I think it works best when a series starter is free because you get a lot more eyeballs, although on the other hand, people who pay 0.99 are more likely to spend real money on the rest of the series. And I think that I’m starting to see diminished returns with this, the third time promoting Don’t Move Out for a BookBub Featured Deal. Maybe it’s time to let that one rest and focus on other books?
Finally, here’s where I was out and about - at Hever Castle, this time, enjoying taking pictures of flowers that I tell myself I will one day use for embroidery inspiration but which will likely remain, alas, just pretty pictures of flowers on my camera roll.
Books
Okay, you've read the Substack posts (and maybe you're a little bit confused if that's where you started). Wondering who all of these characters are? Thinking you need a refresher on past books?
Each week, I share the one TikTok video that performed best out of the last seven days.
All of these videos are available on TikTok for free, but if you’re a) not a TikTok user or b) just want the best highlights, this is a convenient place to see it.
This week’s best is below, and it’s my unboxing of a couple of new 90s-set queer horror books:
